Chasing Eternity: Time

Chasing Eternity: Time

As we consider how to honor the Lord with our time, one helpful tool is the idea of fixed prayer at the beginning, middle, and end of each day. I have found that being intentional to pray at these regular times of the day keeps me freshly renewed in the Lord’s perspective throughout the day. Below are some examples of prayers that I have adapted from Invitation to Retreat, by Ruth Haley Barton:

Morning Prayer
Heavenly Father, open my lips, and I will declare your praise. Today you said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. This very day you have acted. I rejoice in you! Praise the Lord! God’s name be praised!

New every morning is your love, great God of light. And all day long you are working good in the world. Bring to bear in me this day the resurrection life of your Son, my Savior, Jesus Christ, and empower me by the Holy Spirit to serve you and others. Amen.

Mid-Day Prayer
Oh God of peace, you word teaches me that in returning and rest I will be saved, and in quietness and trust is my strength. By the power of your Holy Spirit, quiet my heart, I pray, so that I may be still and know that you are God, through Jesus Christ my Lord. Amen.

Evening Prayer
I praise you and thank you, O God, for you are without beginning and without end. Through Christ, you created the whole world, and through Christ, you preserve it. Through Christ you made the day for the works of light and the night for the refreshment of my mind and body. Keep me now in Christ, grant me a peaceful evening, and a night free from sin. Through Christ and in the Holy Spirit, I offer you all glory, honor, and worship, now and forever. Amen.
