The Power of God
Psalm 147:5 states, “Great is our Lord, and abundant in power.” If there is one over-arching lesson we can learn from the plagues on Egypt, it is that God is abundantly powerful. There is nothing and no one that can stand up to him. He does what he wants when he wants how he wants. At the same time his power always flows from his goodness. So often in our broken world those in power use their power in broken ways, abusing it and using it for evil purposes. Not so with the Lord. His power is perfect. It is perfect in judgment against those who reject him, but it is also perfect in rescuing those who receive him. God’s heart is to use his power to rescue and bring life. May we remember that the Lord’s power is most perfectly seen in the sending of his Son to rescue us from sin, and for all those whose faith is in Christ we now have that power at work within us by the Holy Spirit (Eph. 3:14-21), so that we can face our daily struggles and trials with peace and hope and assurance that is rooted in the great power of our God.
“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted. But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” - Isaiah 40:27-31
