Philippians: Be Encouraged - SERMON NOTES

The Book of Philippians

Intro: (1) overview of letter (2) foundations series → importance of hitting passages from different angles (3) overall theme of encouragement → series title

Encouraged by faithfulness (1:1-11):
(1) read v.3-7 (2) “partnership in gospel” (cf. mission partner sharing) (3) “partakers of grace” (cf. “learning to not let enemy beat me up”)

Encouraged in suffering (1:12-26): (1) v.12 → unexpected setbacks (cf. Ph.D ) (2) v.15 → close contact with those who live from envy/selfish ambition (cf. co-workers) (3) asking for God’s perspective

Encouraged in humility (1:27-2:18): (1) v.2:3-5 (2) “combo of value/need” (3) only possible in Christ (4) comes from things not going our way → humility before God greater than getting what we want

Encouraged by familiar faces (2:19-30): (1) v.2:19,25 → Timothy and Epaphroditus mentioned
specifically by name (2) some of the best encouragement is RELATIONAL (3) church during sabbatical

Encouraged in opposition (3:1-4:3): (1) external (3:2-3) → placing value in personal performance (cf. achievement, appearance, social status) (2) 12b → encouraged by resting in my identity in Christ

Encouraged in truth (4:4-9): (1) v.4-5 → be joyful by remembering the Lord’s presence (3) v.6-7 → be at peace because always sees/hears (4) v.8-9 → fruits produced (5) Jeremy’s sermon

Encouraged by contentment (4:10-23): (1) v.12 → learned through high/low seasons (cf. veteran saints) (2) v.13 → learned by operating in Christ’s strength (3) v.14 → easier with others (cf. shep group)
